Copyright and Usage
Effective: October 11, 2024
The International Monetary Fund (the “IMF”) maintains websites and portals (the “Sites”) to provide direct access to its information, documents, data, and materials (collectively, “Content”) to those who choose to access and use the Sites (“You” or “Users”). The IMF maintains the Sites for informational purposes only.
Some Content available on the Sites, such as statistical data, may be subject to special terms of use, which are set out below. Please contact copyright@imf.org for questions about these terms of use.
By accessing the IMF Sites and/or using any IMF content, You acknowledge that You have fully read, understood, and agree to be bound by the following Terms and Conditions, including the IMF Privacy Notice. These Terms and Conditions and the IMF Privacy Notice may be updated from time to time at the discretion of the IMF, and it is the User’s responsibility to periodically review and take into account any changes. If you do not want to agree to these Terms and Conditions or the Privacy Notice, you must not access or use the Sites.
General Terms and Conditions of Usage
The Terms and Conditions outlined here include policies concerning the use of IMF Sites; how to obtain permission for copying, reusing, or disseminating Content; and the “fair use” of Content, for example, by journalists for news reporting purposes.
Unless stated otherwise, the Content presented on the IMF Sites are the intellectual property of the IMF and are published “All Rights Reserved.” Digital access to IMF content is free via IMF.org, eLibrary.IMF.org, and other IMF sites and portals.
Users may use Content on the conditions outlined below without obtaining written permission by the IMF:
- Creating links to our websites is freely permitted as long as this is done in a manner that is not misleading and does not imply endorsement by or affiliation with the IMF. Due to frequent updates and ongoing modifications, please do not copy or republish Content from the IMF's website for reproduction on a non-IMF website.
- The IMF allows free non-systematic downloading and/or printing of Content from its Sites by Users for personal, noncommercial usage only without any right to resell, redistribute, compile, or create derivative works.
- When reusing IMF Content, please include a citation giving credit to the source material.
One suggested format is:
Author. Year of publication. Title of the work. City of publication: Publisher. © IMF. URL or DOI/
For example:
IMF. 2023. World Economic Outlook, October 2023. Washington, DC: International Monetary Fund. ©IMF. https://doi.org/10.5089/9798400235801.081
- The IMF’s written permission must be obtained for all other uses, including these instances:
- Permission is required to copy or download IMF Content in any systematic way or to re-use, publish, and disseminate a substantial amount beyond “Fair Use,” whether for commercial or noncommercial purposes.
- Fair use is defined by the IMF as the excerption or quoting of IMF content by individuals (e.g., academics, journalists, students, IMF country authorities, etc.) for noncommercial purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research. Such “fair use” is authorized for up to 1000 words or no more than one-quarter of the content, whichever is less, from any one source. A complete citation to clearly identify the source(s) of the excerpted/quoted IMF material to their readers should accompany the material.
- If you believe your plans exceed the permitted uses described above, or if you have other uses, including for electronic reserves and course packs—you may obtain permissions for most IMF Content via the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) at www.marketplace.copyright.com or by using the CCC button on this page. Alternatively, you may email the IMF Permissions Manager at copyright@IMF.org.
- Requests to translate IMF Content should be sent to copyright@imf.org. More information on the IMF rights and translation program can be found at https://www.bookstore.IMF.org/rights-and-permissions
- IMF Sites may contain Content and data from third-party publishers. For material not attributed to the IMF, users should obtain permission directly from the respective third-party copyright holder.
- Users may not use the Sites or Content in a manner that 1) disrupts, disables, or overburdens the IMF’s administration and management of the Sites; 2) interferes with another User’s ability to access the Sites, as determined by the IMF at its sole discretion; 3) in a manner that is disparaging, fraudulent, or unlawful; or 4) in a manner that is misleading or implies endorsement by or affiliation with the IMF.
- The IMF prohibits the bulk download of information by automated technology without explicit permission and reserves the right to terminate access to its Sites or Content.
- The IMF does not permit use of its Content or Sites for the training of large language models (LLMs) without explicit permission.
